What is the cost of the programs? There is no cost to 11th or 12th grade students to attend programs at KCTC. The fee for adult students who have graduated from high school is $200 per semester. Enrollment of adults is based on space availability. How will Kent Career Technical Center help prepare students for the future and for the real world? Programs provide students with real-world skills and the preparation to pursue further career-related college or technical training after high school. Are there any prerequisites for any of the programs? There are no formal prerequisites for students attending KCTC other than students being in grades 11th or 12th and in good standing with their foundation classes at their home school. There is a recommended list of subjects in each program, which are helpful in the preparation for a particular career field. What is the length of programs offered at Kent Career Technical Center? Most courses are offered as two-year programs. If a student doesn't like their program choice, what alternatives do they have? Students may consult a KCTC or high school counselor regarding changing to a different program, or returning to high school classes at your home school. What time do classes begin and end? One session at KCTC equals three one-hour classes at the home school. Three sessions of two hours and 15 minutes are offered Monday through Friday. Kent Career Technical Center has agreements with many West Michigan colleges to coordinate the curricula of a number of programs in an effort to save its students time and tuition. Upon successful completion, academic testing competency, and instructor recommendation, these colleges will grant credit and/or advanced standing for time spent in courses, saving college-bound students hundreds of dollars in tuition and instructional time. Will students need to provide their own transportation to KCTC? No, transportation is provided to and from KCTC and arranged by the student's home school. Does KCTC offer evening training classes for adults? No programs are offered in the evening. Adults should inquire at local postsecondary schools. Some are ITT Technical Institute, Grand Rapids Community College, Davenport University, Ferris State University, and Grand Valley State University. What services are offered to the public at Kent Career Technical Center? Services provided as training experiences by students to the general public include:
What procedure should KCTC students follow if they need to miss class/have missed class Students should telephone KCTC and leave a message for their instructor indicating the absence and any other pertinent information. With each absence, students lose their Behavior portion of the daily grade (this amounts to approximately 25% of the daily grade), but may make up the Skill Achievement portion of their Daily Attendance Grade (worth 75%). Students MUST provide a documented explanation to their instructor within three school days of the absence for make-up work. Please consult the Student Handbook for additional information. How are Semester Grades calculated at KCTC? Semester grades are composed of two nine-week grades and a semester evaluation: First Nine Weeks-45%; Second Nine Weeks-45%; and a Semester Evaluation-10% How are Quarter Grades calculated at KCTC? A student's grade is computed weekly and composed of two major categories: Work Habits which factor in daily attendance (25%) and behavior (25%); and Skill Achievement (50%) which includes performance on assignments, lab work, quizzes, tests, and projects as they relate to the skill standards as outlined in the course syllabus. Work behaviors may include being on task, cooperation, punctuality, safety habits, teamwork and timeliness in completion of projects as outlined in the course syllabus What does a Semester Evaluation consist of? Each semester, students are evaluated by business and industry advisory committees made up of professionals within their technical areas. All students are required to participate in these evaluations. An evaluation may include both written and performance components. The evaluation accounts for 10% of the semester grade. If a student does not complete the semester evaluation, an incomplete grade may be issued and he/she will receive a zero for 10% of the final semester grade. Students will have to arrange a time to take the evaluation when an advisory member is available. As a parent or guardian, how can I regularly view my child's attendance record and grades? Grades are updated weekly by the instructor. Attendance is taken the first 15 minutes of class. Attendance and grades are available on-line to parents/guardians and guardians through Power School Parent Connect. The web address and passwords will be available at the start of each school year. Who should students contact if they need help with personal counseling, career planning, language support, and/or assistance in the job search? Students are encouraged to visit the Student Services Department offices which are located in both the C-Wing and also near the entrance to E-Wing. The Student Services Department provides students with a wide range of services aimed at ensuring that each student receives the full benefit of attending KCTC. The primary focus of these services is to ensure students have the academic and technical support necessary for success in the classroom and laboratory, they receive assistance in making good career choices and they continue their education and/or obtain related employment. A team of Student Services staff members (including a counselor, an academic support teacher, a teacher consultant and a work-based learning coordinator) are assigned to work with students. This team will work with the instructor and student to meet the specific needs of the student. What is KCTC's Student Code of Conduct? Any student who disrupts the normal operation of the school, or behaves in a manner that creates a danger to the health, safety, or welfare of themselves, other students or school employees, will be subject to a referral to the Responsible Thinking Center (RTC) or disciplinary action up to and including suspension or expulsion from KCTC.
