Introduction to Hospitality

Program Description - Two-Year Program
The first year of the Hospitality Cluster prepares students for a variety of careers in the hospitality industry, which includes travel and tourism, food service and lodging. Common areas of study include: bakery production, food preparation, guest services, hospitality concepts, principles of sanitation and safety certification. During the first year, students develop specialized technical skills as well as learn teamwork, problem solving, and entrepreneurship. All first year students rotate through these four 9 week units:

  • Introduction to Hospitality
  • Introduction to Baking
  • Introduction to Dining Room/Short Order Cooking
  • Introduction to Culinary Arts
After completing this first year rotation, the Hospitality Cluster student will choose an area of specialization for the second year. The specialized areas are Baking or Culinary Arts.

Benefits for the College Bound
This program provides students with beneficial skills to use while financing a college education. Upon completion of this program, students may be eligible to receive advanced placement and/or college credit toward an associate/bachelor degree from Davenport University, Ferris State University, Johnson and Wales University, Grand Rapids Community College, and Northwood University. Credit may be granted based upon competency testing and instructor recommendation.


For Enrollment Purposes
Students interested in the Hospitality Cluster enroll in Introduction to Hospitality for the first year. If a student returns for a second year, the choices are Baking and Culinary Arts.
