Esthetics Course Description Esthetics is the study and practice of the art, science and care of the skin as governed by the State of Michigan PA 299 of 1980. The study of Esthetics is designed to train the student in the safety and application of facials and treatments, by the means of cleansing, massaging, stimulating, manipulating, exercising and beautifying, or by the use of cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, tonics, lotions, creams or similar work upon the scalp, neck, face, arms, bust or upper part of the body of a person, or the removing of superfluous hair from the upper part of the body, by the means of, depilatories, waxes, or tweezers. Additional Program Information The Kent Career Technical Center Esthetician program is a one-year course. The State of Michigan, State Board of Cosmetology, PA 299 of 1980 regulates the program. The State of Michigan requirements include 400 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction. KCTC furnishes the complete instructional curriculum within two concurrent school semesters. Students may attend in their junior or senior year of high school. The student will attend a minimum of 400 hours of training by teh end of one year. Students that do not complete the program within two concurrent semesters may complete training at a private school at their own expense. The student will spend the first 100 hours of training in the classroom and laboratory learning skills and related theory. Since a student is not allowed to practice on clients until they have completed 100 hours of theory and classroom practice, per PA 299 of 1980, the student MUST AGREE to exchange such practice with other students. After 100 hours, students will continue practical work on clients in the clinic. The clinic is a simulated salon, open to the public, under the supervision of licensed instructors. The students will continue to have theory classes in all phases of Esthetics. Within the last month of training, the student will be given a series of pre-state exams, in both the practical and theory applications. A grade of 75 percent or better is REQUIRED to pass the exams (PA 299 of 1980). Along with the hour requirements and pre-state exams, the students will need to complete the state-required curriculum and minimum practical applications. Upon satisfactory completion of the curriculum, the student may apply, with the State of Michigan, to take the examination for a license in Esthetics.
