Additional Program Information
The Cosmetology program is a 1500-hour State of Michigan regulated occupation. KC/TC furnishes the complete curriculum within four consecutive school semesters. This can be accomplished in two years. Students will gain marketable skills, business career awareness, and adaptability necessary to be successful in the ever-changing Cosmetology industry. Students who enroll in the Cosmetology program should have employment in the Cosmetology profession as a goal. Due to the limited number of openings and the great demand, this program will be offered to students who are committed to completing the entire program.

  • The Students are required to purchase a $500 tool kit. Payment schedules can be arranged.

First-Year Students
First-year students will complete the first 350 hours of attendance in the classroom and laboratory learning skills and related theory. Since students are not permitted to practice on clients until they have completed 350 hours of theory and classroom practice, the students MUST AGREE to exchange such practice with each other. Actual permanent waves, hair coloring, and haircutting are excluded but may be done on a voluntary basis with a permission note from a parent or guardian. All students will practice on mannequins.

Second-Year Students
Second-year students will continue practical work on clients in the clinic. The clinic is a simulated beauty salon, open to the public, under the supervision of licensed cosmetology instructors. The students will continue theory classes in all phases of Cosmetology.

Pre-State Exams
During the last 300 hours of training, the student will take a series of pre-state exams, in both theory and practical applications. A passing grade of 75 percent or better is required on all the exams. Along with the hour requirements and pre-state exams, the student will be required to complete the state-required curriculum and minimum practical applications. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the student may apply to take an examination for the State of Michigan license in Cosmetology. It will be necessary for students who do not complete the program within four consecutive school semesters to complete the program at a private cosmetology school at their own expense.

Selection Process
It is recommended for students choosing the Cosmetology program:

  • During the year prior to enrolling in the program, the student should attend a program visit in Cosmetology.
  • The student should attend the Spring Orientation session scheduled by the Cosmetology Department.
