Applied Construction Technology

Program Description - Two-Year Program
The Applied Construction Technology Program provides the student with knowledge and skills to build a house from the foundation to its completion. Students spend one year learning the "roughing in" aspects, completing the exterior of the house. A second year is spent completing the interior of the house. This two-year experience provides students with the following:

  • Carpentry skills
  • Safe use of hand and power tools
  • Materials selection, layout, preparation and fabrication
  • Applying countertops and ceramic tile
  • Applying siding
  • Door hanging and trimming
  • Hanging wallboard
  • Installing windows
  • Painting/wallpapering
  • Roofing
  • Roughing in walls
  • Cabinet making


Helpful Experience & Aptitudes
It is strongly recommended that a student entering the Applied Construction Technology Program be able to:
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Convert fractions to decimals
  • Convert decimals to fractions
  • Read a ruler proficiently to 1/16 of an inch
  • Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, both hot and cold
  • Climb ladders and work at heights
  • Be agile and well-conditioned to work safely
  • Take accurate notes in class
  • Use handouts and other materials to study for written tests
  • Be willing to do homework on a regular basis

Benefits for the College Bound
This program provides the student with beneficial skills to use while financing a college education. Through an articulation agreement, students who complete this program may be granted advanced placement and/or college credit toward an associate degree in building construction technology from Ferris State University. Credit may be granted based on competency testing and instructor recommendation.
