APPRENTICESHIPS

Employer-Sponsored Apprenticeship is a formal method of training people in career occupations. The average term of an apprenticeship ranges from 24 to 60 months, with 144 hours of formal education per year in technical subjects related to a career. Apprenticeship provides work-based training and education, with pay, and leads to recognized credentials with an outcome of national certification. Please consult the KCTC Work-Based Learning Office for additional information about Employer-Sponsored Apprenticeships.

School-to-Registered Apprenticeship is a system that allows the secondary student to begin an apprenticeship while in high school. This provides the student and the employer with several advantages. The student can begin the apprenticeship prior to graduation from high school. This encourages the articulation of secondary experiences with the "apprenticeship" and "post-secondary instruction" and helps ensure that the student will not have to repeat prior to related training. In addition, the student has a full- or part-time position in that field upon graduation. Finally, the student has the opportunity to gain proficiency in the skills learned at the Kent Career Technical Center.

Employers who participate in apprenticeship programs benefit by providing training to workers who have aptitudes for the specific skills needed by their companies, while building, from the beginning, loyalty among employees who perform as productive team members. Apprentices quickly move to higher-level jobs. In many cases, certified employees are a primary source for supervisory and leadership positions.

Kent Career Technical Center has established many apprenticeships with local employers. New apprenticeships are continually being designed and implemented. Programs at Kent Career Technical Center that presently have apprenticeships are noted in each Program Description, underneath the "Career Entry Opportunities" heading.
